AGU fall meeting 2017

After presenting during the European Geophysical Union last year, I thought I might better also try presenting at the American Geophysical Union fall meeting. The AGU fall meeting is the biggest conference in our field and also one of the most important. Normally the AGU fall meeting is in San Francisco, however the conference centre is being renovated. Therefore, this year and next year, the location is different than normal. This year the conference was in New Orleans! City of jazz, blues and good food. Of course there was some time in the evenings to explore the city, but I spend most of my time in the conference centre. Beside a short visit to the French quarter the day before the conference, we only made a short visit to Bourbon Street the last evening.

During the conference me and Jasper got the chance to meet up with some PhDs we met during the SIESD summer school at SAFL, Minneapolis. It was a good chance to catch up and it was nice to see everyone again.

I was very pleased with my poster presentation at the AGU. Often I feel a bit disappointed when I am not chosen to give a talk, not because I feel talks are a better way to present research, but you often do not get a lot of feedback during a poster session. Often conference attendees use poster sessions as a break to go to the toilet, get a coffee or get something to eat. However, the poster sessions at the AGU were very busy and very long. I planned to stand at my poster for two hours or so and then look around myself, but I talked with many different people for more than the full four hours! I’m not used to talk so long, so at the end my throat was quite sore, but it was worth it.
