Distributing sand in the Metronome
July 10th, 2015
The experimental setup for tidal experiments, The Metronome, is almost finished. Electrical wiring, laying water pipes, installing cameras etc., is all done. At the moment, the Metronome is covered with artificial grass for roughness. Increased roughness will prevent the preferential flow of water along the metal walls and bottom, caused by less resistance. Before we start the actual experiments, we want to study the flow in the Metronome in detail without sediment transport. To do these experiments, the artificial grass needs to be filled with some sediment so it will not float to the surface, and a shape of an estuary needs to be laid out in the flume.
Yesterday, Anne, Jasper, Arjan (technician), and I spent the morning distributing 1 cubic meter of sand through the Metronome, sweeping it in the artificial grass. Besides that, several elongated bags needed to be filled with sand, with which the shape of an estuary could be made in the flume.
