Looking for mud! (Fieldwork Walsoorden)

October 24th, 2017

Yesterday we went for Fieldwork in the Western Scheldt on the tidal bar of Walsoorden. This was not an easy task; not only did we have to get up at five to be there in time for maximum low tide, the bar is in the middle of the estuary, and we had to bring a lot of equiment. Our aim was to figure out where mud was present on and in the tidal bar of Walsoorden. Even though the dominant sediment is sand, we want to know more about when and where mud layers are stored. Do they show in the stratigraphy? What is the spatial distribution?

In two groups, we tackled these questions for about four hours during low tide. Since we had only four hours, we had to hurry. The ‘long legs’ group went to the far NW end of the bar, and the other group stayed in and around the marsh area in the SE. We covered as many environments as possible and discovered interesting differences in the preservation of mud in different areas of the bar.
