Mini-Metronome Terschelling

Since a few weeks the Metronome has a new baby brother (or sister?) on Terschelling, a wadden island of the Netherlands. Together with Jan Mulder (pensioner and friend of Terschelling) I visited Teschelling twice to help set it up and to show how it worked. By visiting Utrecht University and email contact, Staatsbosbeheer (state forest management) was able to make a non-automatic mini-metronome. During my first visit with Jan, we were there to test it and make decisions on for example pumps, sediment grain size and tilting amplitude. During the second visit everything was set and Jan, I and colleague Marcio Albernaz went there to show the employees of Staatsbosbeheer and their volunteers how to do some simple experiments that show the dynamics of tidal systems. Staatsbosbeheer want to teach the island the changes around the island are naturalĀ and even though there are moments that certain places on the island experience erosion, there are also moments of deposition. The experiments on the Island will be used for educational purposes for children, students and visitors of the island. The mini-metronome setup will be placed permanently in their visitor centre.

Recently the flume was officially used for the first time for teaching a class of primary school children about the tidal inlets around the island they live on.
